There are millions of people who have now adopted a lifestyle devoted to eating foods with only low carbs. Even those who are not necessarily following all of the guidelines of a specific diet have put many of the aspects of a diet with low carbs into their everyday eating habits. Making sure that most foods in the house are labeled as having low carbs has become almost a national pastime. And so it follows from the success of low carb diets that many women who are pregnant are interested in sticking to this type of diet even through their pregnancy. The biggest problem with this has been that their was precious little research that had been done on the topic of pregnancy and low carbs.

There is one study in particular that was done in England at the University of Southhampton School of Medicine that ran tests on rats to see the effects of diet with low carbs on the offspring. The study showed that the offspring of mice who were fed a diet high in unsaturated fat and protein, but low in carbs during their pregnancy and lactation, had lower triglyceride levels than those whose mothers ate a standard diet that is high carb and low fat. The low carb offspring also had higher protein amounts that help fatty acid oxidation. Both of these results are also important for humans because they reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

There is still a lot of research that has to be done to produce the definitive answers on the ultimate food low in carbs .  More and more academics are becoming interested in the long term effects of a low carbohydrate diet. If you are pregnant there are a lot of resources now on the Internet as well as chat rooms that can be accessed to discuss the issue with others that are considering the same thing as well as professionals who are doing studies. No one should ever go on any type of diet when they are pregnant without the supervision of a doctor and this is especially the case with many of the diets that need you to keep counting carbs.
